Environmental Scientist

Minimum Requirements:

• B.S. in environmental science, biology, natural resource management, or related field.
• Ability to complete work assignments efficiently and meet challenging deadlines while maintaining URS’ high quality standards.
• Excellent critical thinking skills, especially regarding work tasks and priorities and client requirements.
• Ability to learn and contribute as a member of an Ecological Services Group.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey thoughts clearly and concisely.
• Ability to travel a minimum of 50% of the time, with some periods of multiple consecutive travel weeks.
• Ability to work overtime as required.
• Ability to traverse rugged terrain in all types of weather conditions.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Proficiency with standard computer and software programs.


Job Description: URS is seeking to fill an Environmental Scientist position in the Ecological Services Group of the Pittsburgh, PA office. The successful candidate will participate in wetland and stream identification and delineation, collection of field data, and the preparation of state and federal permit applications for impacts to these resources. The majority of this work will be in support of URS’ substantial and expanding natural gas work, especially for siting and permitting pipelines, well sites, and compressor stations. Beneficial knowledge and experience areas include: plant identification, soil science, hydrology, stream morphology and ecology, high-precision GPS operation, rare/threatened/endangered species habitat and surveys (especially Indiana bat, timber rattlesnake, or rare plants), GIS, Pennsylvania Dam Safety and Waterway Management (Chapter 105) regulations and/or Erosion and Sediment Control (Chapter 102) regulations and permitting (or similar state regulations in Ohio, West Virginia, or New York), federal Clean Water Act Section 404 regulations and permitting (including the Pennsylvania State Programmatic General Permit and Nationwide permits), and wetland mitigation.


Responsibilities:
• Participate as a member of a wetland and stream delineation team with a senior environmental (wetland) scientist
• Collect the required field data on wetland and stream resources, including plant community, soil and hydrology characteristics. Also collect location information with a high-precision GPS unit
• Prepare reports and permit applications related to wetlands and stream investigations/impacts
• Coordinate and communicate with URS team members, permitting agencies, and client representatives as assigned
• Perform all task assignments accurately and efficiently to meet challenging deadlines while meeting URS’ high quality and safety standards
