GIS Analyst

MarketSource, Inc. is currently seeking a Geographic Information Systems Analyst (GISA) performs a specialized role that engages in mapping, sales territory creation, and analysis to optimize resource coverage solutions and demonstrate MarketSource value and results for retail and commercial clients.   This opening is a Business GIS position. Therefore, a background in Business or Retail GIS is favorable to other GIS disciplines.

The GISA reports to MarketSource’s GIS Manager and supports projects ranging from location data preparation to data analysis to advanced sales territory design. The position is salaried and requires occasional after-hours work.

 

Job Responsibilities:

Prepare data: acquire, clean, and geocode location data; help maintain MarketSource’s location database.

Use GIS software: analyze spatial data; create efficient clusters of locations (sales territories) balanced by specific data variables; create maps for use by our management and field teams; analyze sales data to interpret the impact of our programs

Document and communicate: Document pre-project requirements and distribute for approval; communicate with stakeholders in HQ and the field, and distribute final deliverables in PowerPoint, Excel, and, occasionally, mapping formats such as .kmz; edit existing process documentation and create new as needed; remain current with Retail GIS trends and apply them to MarketSource’s GIS services

Participate in meetings (including but not limited to): coverage modeling strategy sessions with internal and external clients for gathering and documenting project requirements; coverage model review sessions with various stakeholders; department and team-level meetings

Work closely with: Reporting & Analytics team, Market Research, Retail and Commercial Practice Leads, Sales Support, Business Process Organization, and program team leadership (both at headquarters and in the field

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Core Competencies:

Required

Desire to learn; knack for learning quickly

Strong grasp of “team:” backing and building each other up, voluntarily sharing knowledge and new things learned, pitching in to help teammates who have spiking workloads, communicating and receiving feedback openly and respectfully, contributing to a collective positive attitude, etc.

Software: advanced skills in Microsoft Access, Excel, and PowerPoint; basic, working experience with a GIS/mapping program such as ArcMap, MapPoint, MapInfo, etc.

Superior ability to present data aesthetically and logically with maps, data tables, and written communication (samples are welcomed as attachments to resumes)

Solid interpersonal skills and drive to understand clients and their needs

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

High degree of self-motivation and tenacity with attention to detail while still completing work in time for firm and/or tight deadlines; ability to multitask; availability and willingness to work after-hours if necessary 

Drive to learn exciting technologies and methodologies tempered with the patience to do less glamorous tasks as well

Strongly Desired

Software: basic SQL skills; ESRI ArcGIS programming using VB Script and/or Python; experience using Caliper Maptitude’s GISDK

High-level familiarity with the milieu, terminology, and inner workings of retail and B2B sales; experience working in retail is a plus

Experience analyzing demographic data (e.g. census data, Simmons and Media Mark variables, neighborhood tapestries, etc.) and/or sales data

Experience with data cleansing (especially location data) and geocoding

Firm grasp of Retail GIS trends, resources, and best practices

Additional Skills/ Experience

Software: experience with BI software such as SPSS, Alteryx, WebFocus, SharePoint, etc.; experience with ESRI Business Analyst; experience with Natural Insight and/or Salesforce.com; experience with territory alignment software such as AlignStar, ProAlign, etc.

Familiarity with sales outsourcing

Experience participating in the proposal-writing process

Experience documenting business processes

Non-GIS career backgrounds that may be helpful: business analyst, retail salesperson (or any position in retail), call center representative; computer programmer; market researcher 

Education

B.A. or B.S. degree required.
