Economic Development Specialist

Hiring salary range $53,000-$61,000/year.

Performs complex professional work related to the coordination of the business development activities and workforce development efforts of the City; does related work as required.

Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Economic Development.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
The Economic Development Specialist works as a key member of a team dedicated to enhancing the long-term economic vitality of Charlottesville. Key responsibilities will include business development activities and working to improve opportunities for entrepreneurial growth in the City.

Duties include: serving as a liaison to business and neighborhood associations; identifying, researching and implementing local solutions for key issues; providing assistance to city based small businesses and working collaboratively with partner organizations to ensure a high level of service for entrepreneurs. Other responsibilities include regular business visitations, planning and execution of training events, data mining and demographic analysis, developing economic reports, marketing and social media.

Education, Experience and Skills:
The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, or Business or closely related field. Applicants should be comfortable working in a fast paced customer focused environment and must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively both internally and externally on important issues, proficiency in word processing software, experience with GIS systems, the ability to prepare graphic information and concise reports, and the ability to work with the public in a competent and friendly manner. Occasional travel may be required in and out of Charlottesville. Minimum requirements are a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of experience. Master’s degree may substitute for related experience. Work experience above two-year minimum may substitute for education for up to 4 years.

Education: Requires a combination of experience and education equivalent to a BA in Business, Planning, Public Administration, Finance or Economics or a related field and two years of related experience.

Skills: Knowledge of modern principles and practices of economic development; knowledge of the principles and practices of public business administration; thorough knowledge of financial practices; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees, and the public; ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
