Physical Geography/Earth Surface Processes

FAIRBANKS, AK, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Department of Geography.

Applications are invited for a nine-month, tenure-track position in Physical Geography at the Assistant Professor level, to begin Fall 2014. Those with a strong orientation to field work, both in research and teaching, are especially encouraged to apply. We seek an enthusiastic, interdisciplinary scientist with interests in undergraduate education and the circumboreal North. He or she will teach undergraduate courses in Introduction to Physical Geography, Maps & Landscape Analysis, Weather & Climate, and Senior Practicum. Other possible courses include Geographic Prediction & Assessment of Natural Hazards, Geography of Climate & Environmental Change, Polar Geography, or other courses within the individual's specialty. The successful candidate will be someone who enjoys working with undergraduates from diverse backgrounds and will be expected to advise students, encourage undergraduate research, and help develop our Climate Change and Environmental Studies curricula. He or she is expected to develop an externally funded research program, preferably focusing on high latitudes. The ratio among teaching, research, and service responsibilities is approximately 60:30:10.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) offers a BA in Geography, a BS in Geography (with concentrations in Environmental Studies, Landscape Analysis & Climate Change Studies, or Geospatial Sciences), and Minors in Geography and GIS. UAF is world-class center for climate-change research and all aspects of polar research, including geology, geophysics, biology, atmospheric science, and oceanography. We see the Geography Department as a bridge between these diverse disciplines, and undergraduate geography courses as opportunities to train a new generation of interdisciplinary citizens, resource managers, policy advisors, and scientists.
