GIS / RS Analyst

The Program Associate 1 (PA1) is responsible for development and analyses of spatial databases, design and implementation of user interfaces, integration of field and other ancillary spatial data into GIS, remote sensing (RS) image processing and analysis, and organization and archiving of Ecosystem Services GIS related work products. The PA1 supports acquisition of field data, remote sensing imagery and other spatial data products and provides support to project implementation activities, operations and communications. The PA1 will also be responsible for writing technical sections (methods and analysis) in proposal preparation activities and project reports. The position will provide technical support to the unit’s implementation of research initiatives and project activities, both in the field and in the DC office. The PA1 will also contribute to the incorporation of GIS components in monitoring and evaluation in proposals for other Winrock units and, later, in the implementation of the projects.

Qualifications AND BACKGROUND:

Education: Master’s degree required with demonstrated coursework in the application of GIS techniques to issues in ecosystem ecology, forestry, natural resource management or a closely related field. Must have demonstrated experience in the application of spatial analysis to land use, land use change, or land planning.

Bachelor’s degree with extensive work experience will be considered as equivalent.

Experience: 2+ years of experience with GIS related to ecosystem services required. (Education can count towards experience.)

Experience in analysis and design of projects using information technology and GIS required.

Good understanding of remote sensing methods and techniques.

Demonstrated ability to work with public and private sector is desired.

Team and administrative support experience desired.

International experience including direct involvement in technical programs and/or ecological field techniques for measuring ecosystem components in a developing country desired.

Experience with databases using SQL including construction and macro development is desirable.

Experience with design, implementation of scientific research and presentation of results in scientific fora.

Skills: Ability to work and train using GIS/ Image processing software packages: IDRISI, ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, ENVI and land use models such as GEOMOD and Land Change Modeler

Familiarity with a broad range of forestry and environmental issues is required

Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, including a demonstrated ability to produce clear and concise reports and presentations on highly technical material (peer-reviewed publications, professional presentations, etc.)

Traditional ecological/forestry field measurement and sampling skills and experiences are desired.

Familiarity in programming in related languages desired, e.g. Python programming.

Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, email, presentation, and database software is required.

Familiarity with at least one statistical software package is desired.

Proficiency with remote sensing and GIS tools for hydrological modeling is desired.

Demonstrated strong analytical capability and excellent interpersonal skills are required including the ability to interact effectively with others taking into account cultural sensitivities.

Fluency in English required plus a second language desired

Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Other: Must be willing to travel -sometimes to remote locations, both domestically and internationally.

Must not require a visa to work in the U.S.
