DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University's Department of Geography invites applications for one academic year temporary (.8 timebase) faculty position for academic year 2014/2015. Initial appointment will be for Fall 2014 semester. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2015 will be contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluation and may have the potential to be made at a higher timebase depending on department need and interest of the successful candidate.

Professional Qualifications: An earned PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Geography or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred at the time of appointment. Applicants with considerable progress toward doctoral degree completed by appointment date will be considered and are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
- Commitment and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Potential or ability to teach courses in cartography and upper division courses in either human or physical geography;
- Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
- Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses (majors, general education, etc.); and
- Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences.
At the time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States. Evidence of degree(s) is required at time of hire.
Professional Duties: We seek candidates with the ability to teach courses in cartography and geospatial techniques and upper-division courses in either human or physical geography. Instructional assignments will depend on candidate's expertise and will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. The teaching load could include both lower and upper division courses, some of which may be general education offerings. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues.
General Information: The Geography Department has an extensive undergraduate program, with both a major and minor, incorporating a wide range of courses in human and physical geography and geographic techniques. With dedicated Cartography/Geovisualization and Dendroecology labs, our department is nationally renowned for innovative teaching, hands-on learning, and field-study experiences.
