Assistant Director - Economic Development & Government Relations

The Office of Public Affairs invites you to apply for the position of Assistant Director of Economic Development & Government Relations. Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President of Public Affairs, this position will assist in efforts to represent and advance Arizona State University's agenda with local government decision-makers primarily at the city level to coordinate economic development initiatives in Tempe.
Essential Duties     


    Assists and promotes Arizona State University's economic development activities, integration and interactions with the City of Tempe as identified by the Assistant Vice President of Public Affairs.
    Assists university officials in continually seeking ways to develop and enhance partnerships with education, business, industry and government.
    Develops strategies and provides analysis of market conditions and local trends in economic development.
    Maintains and cultivates effective lines of communication to local government officials and other relevant stakeholders on economic development efforts of the university and city.
    Develops and maintains strong personal relationships with local government economic development staff and other opinion shapers, to ensure the university's awareness of local economic development activities affecting the university.
    Develops and maintains relationships with ASU's internal departments to identify issues impacting the city and respond to issues brought to ASU.
    Impacts local governments by gaining in-depth knowledge of their economic development issues and applies expertise to facilitate resolutions to the specific situations.
    Uses relationships with the economic development team to provide high quality deliverables.
    Prepares and attends conferences and meetings with government officials to exchange ideas and information on university and city activities.
    Attends and provides testimony when necessary, before city and town council hearings, meetings of local government boards and commission, and other stakeholder meetings.
    Prepares marketing materials, visual aids and/or handouts to enhance understanding of relevant issues and activities.
    Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications     

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications     


    Experience with local governments and municipalities council procedures.
    Demonstrated knowledge of economic development strategies and market trends with skills.
    Experience with business recruitment, attraction, incubators and entrepreneurial activities.
    Experience in research analysis utilizing GIS, STATS, and MAG data of international, national and local markets, and industry/cluster reports based on market data.
    Demonstrated knowledge of local, national and international markets.
    Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
    Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with associate personnel, other University employees and the general public.
    Experience in effective problem resolution and developing effective solutions.
    Experience in making administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
    Experience in preparing and presenting information in a clear and concise manner.
    Experience in organization and time management skills.
    Experience in judgment and ability to function and multi-task under pressure.
    Experience in interacting with internal and external customers.
    Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration or Political Science or related field.
