WAMPO Senior Planner

This is professionally accountable and responsible work involving assignments in the field of transportation planning, including transportation data.  Work performed includes significant project management responsibilities, involving coordination among team members and stakeholders and project administration tasks. Work is performed independently, receiving assistance from a supervisor and other staff members as needed. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation of progress toward goal attainment.
 Examples of Work Performed:
  • Project manager for complex transportation planning and transportation/traffic data initiatives. Duties will include, but not necessarily limited to project scoping and budgeting, meeting facilitation, consensus building, communications, research, plan writing and editing, and overall project administration, coordination, and organization.
  • Coordinates the work of other staff members as part of project management responsibilities.      
  • Makes public presentations to the general public, stakeholders, elected officials, boards, and other groups.
  • Meets with neighborhood, community, and stakeholder groups as part of the planning process.
  • Prepares planning research analysis and related reports.
  • Develops grant applications.
  • Monitors, administers and evaluates third party contracts.
  • Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.

 Requirements of Work:
  • Knowledge of transportation and traffic data.
  • Knowledge of spatial and tabular data compilation, storage, and analysis, including Microsoft Access and ESRI GIS software suite
  • Knowledge of transportation modeling and statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of the practices and principles of long-range transportation planning processes.
  • Knowledge of the principles of performance-based transportation planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently set workload priorities in consultation with team members.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and review the work of assigned team members.
  • Ability to work with demanding and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues with diplomacy and poise.
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information, and proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
 Required Experience and Training:
A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of transportation planning or transportation/traffic data experience are required. A Master’s degree is preferred. Degrees in planning, public administration or policy, a social, or engineering with ties to urban or regional planning or transportation data will be considered.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.  Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
