GIS Instructor

JOB SUMMARY

This full-time teaching position includes instruction of geographic information systems (GIS) courses as part of the Social Science Division, various Water Studies Institute courses, which may include Great Lakes Research Technologies, Underwater Acoustics and Sonar, Marine GIS & Data Processing, and other Marine Technology - Engineering Technology courses in various instructional delivery methods. These may include traditional classroom, video-based, independent study, internet protocol video (IPV), accelerated, self-paced, online (Internet), or others methods as appropriate. This also includes the possibility of teaching night and weekend courses. This person will also be responsible for all lab areas, equipment, tools, and materials as needed. The successful candidate will enjoy working with diverse populations but still be able to connect one-on-one with students. This individual will have good listening skills and the ability to understand the needs of others, be flexible and able to deal with interruptions, and will maintain a high work ethic and integrity.

This person is responsible for working in conjunction with the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, Social Science and Technical Divisions toward the development and instruction of GIS, Marine Technology, and Engineering Technology courses as appropriate. This shall include; prepare and deliver lesson plans that stimulate and enhance student interest and learning, conducting assessments, advanced curriculum and course development, development of professional training programs, advising students on curriculum employment and career goals and supporting and contributing to the growth and development of the academic area. This person is expected to be trained as an academic advisor in the Freshwater Studies and Marine Technology - Engineering Technology programs, after the completion of the first year to begin advising the second year. This instructor will also share in scheduling, recommending the hire of and overseeing adjunct faculty, handling student complaints and issues, placement, textbook selection, and budgets.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATES and LICENSES

Required:

  • Master's degree in engineering, physics, surveying, remote sensing, or field related to the position.
  • Minimum of two years of professional teaching experience at the college level
  • Minimum of five years of experience in Geographic Information Systems industry sector
  • Professional GIS credential
  • Experience with marine data processing software

Preferred:

  • Experience in hydrographic surveying operations
  • Experience with remote sensing technologies
  • Experience with HYPACK software
  • Minimum of ten years in the Geographic Information Systems industry sector
  • Experience with unmanned systems in the marine, ground and aerial environments
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Experience in online course instruction
