Transportation Planner I - Regional Public Transportation Coordination

Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.

The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking entry- or mid-level Transportation Planners to assist in developing, implementing and monitoring public transportation projects in North Central Texas. The individual(s) will work closely with public and private transportation providers, local governments, social service agencies, advocacy groups and communities to implement public transportation projects funded through Federal Transit Administration (FTA) programs for the general public and transit-dependent populations. The individual(s) will assist in fostering partnerships, identifying resources and developing projects. Additional responsibilities may include assisting in implementing projects identified by the Regional Transportation Council (RTC) and supporting committees and work groups. This posting is for the entry-level Transportation Planner I position. Applicants wishing to be considered for this position should apply online. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Regional and Community Mobility Coordination

Assisting in the implementation of strategies outlined in Access North Texas (www.accessnorthtexas.org)
Supporting coordination of planning activities that enhance regional connectivity between rural and urban areas
Providing assistance by working collaboratively with transportation providers and human service agencies to increase access and improve service for transit-dependent populations

Project Management

Assisting in project management activities for short-term projects from application and award through project close-out
Tracking project progress, goals and deliverables
Writing print and electronic technical reports and project status reports

Program and Project Administration

Actively explore innovative strategies to address transportation needs of low-income individuals, people with disabilities, older adults, and other transportation-dependent groups
Assisting with federal grant management and reporting activities
Assisting in the performance of general and technical research, data collection, and analysis

Required Skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills
Sensitivity to cultural, socioeconomic and political issues in the community
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Self-motivation
Innovative problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
Ability to handle multiple projects, organizing and prioritizing multiple tasks
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
Detail oriented and well organized

Required Experience

Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in analytical, quantitative methods (Transportation Planning, Urban/Regional Planning, Political Science, Sociology, Public Administration, Business Administration or related area)
One year of job-related experience or less

Desire Experience In:

Working with community groups and government agencies
Short-term or long-range transportation planning

Salary

Minimum of $36,251.00 per year
