Assistant Professor (Environmental Geographic Information Science)

Effective Date of Appointment: August 16, 2015; 9-month, continuing appointment.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess an earned doctorate in Geography or a closely related field. ABD applicants will be considered if all degree requirements will be met by August 15, 2015. If all requirements for the Ph.D. are not completed by that date, a 9-month term appointment may be offered at the rank of Lecturer at a reduced rate of pay. Applicants must show evidence of relevant teaching and research, including peer-reviewed publication. Applicants must have a professional record that establishes their external funding history or potential. Preference will be given to applicants with a focus on applied environmental research using GIS.

Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include the following: teaching a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses, which may include introductory GIS and upper level courses in the candidate's area of expertise; service on M.S. and Ph.D. student committees; maintaining an active and successful research program that includes seeking external research support; and appropriate service.

The Department: Geography and Environmental Resources is a department within the College of Liberal Arts, It offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geography and Environmental Resources and leads the interdisciplinary Environmental Resources and Policy Ph.D. program. Areas of study at the undergraduate and graduate levels include: Climate and Water Resources, Environmental Sustainability, and Geographic Information Science. Located in the forested Shawnee Hills, 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a Carnegie Doctoral Research University (high research activity).
