Assistant Professor - Geographic Information Science

Required/Preferred Qualifications
Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Society, College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus.

This is a probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of assistant professor, leading to a decision concerning the conferral of indefinite tenure. This is a 100%-time position over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May), beginning spring semester 2015 (01/08/2015) or fall semester 2015 (08/31/2015).

We seek a Geographic Information Scientist who contributes to traditional departmental strengths in geovisualization and cartography, spatial analysis and modeling, or GIS and society. Desirable but not required are secondary research interests in computation on large datasets or examining population and health issues via spatial science approaches.

A Ph.D. in Geography or related discipline must be completed by 08/31/2015.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a strong program of research and publication; external research support; undergraduate and graduate instruction and advising; and provide service to the department, college, University, and profession appropriate for the rank of appointment.

Candidates will be evaluated according to (a) the overall quality of their academic preparation and scholarly work; (b) the relevance of their scholarly research to the department's academic priorities and fields of inquiry; (c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher; and (d) strength of recommendations.

Salary will be competitive, dependent upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, and consistent with collegiate and University policies.  
Duties/Responsibilities
Faculty in the College of Liberal Arts are expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research, to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute service to the department, college, and profession.

Tenure-track assistant professors teach four semester-length courses per academic year at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The development of additional courses and research themes that complement and extend current departmental expertise is strongly encouraged.

Program/Unit Description
The Department of Geography, Environment and Society at the University of Minnesota is an internationally recognized department with a broadly based program involving scholars working in urban geography, globalization, nature-society studies, development studies, climatology, biogeography, and GIScience. It offers B.A., B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Geography, and hosts interdisciplinary undergraduate majors in Urban Studies, and in Biology, Society, and Environment, as well as a Masters of Geographic Information Sciences (http://mgis.umn.edu/).
