The George Mason University, Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (http://ggs.gmu.edu/) invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor position. The successful applicants will work at the client’s site in Washington, D.C.
The client is developing a new data management system which is intended to automate data entry, routine calculations, and database updates; facilitate collaboration and information sharing across the agency; improve data integrity by reducing errors in data entry and processing; facilitate succession planning; and provide numerous other efficiencies that are increasingly critical in a resource-strained environment.
Responsibilities: Main responsibilities include: investigate and recommend an appropriate centralized data repository, subject area databases, and a data management system for an agricultural market analysis program; use expertise to study and recommend appropriate methods and procedures for the system; document findings, program business rules and procedures used by the system; develop user manuals and documentation of the data; study options, recommend, and create customized applications as necessary for accessing data and creating reports; and train individuals to become proficient and self-sufficient in the routine use of the system.
Qualifications: Applicants should have the following required skills, experience and abilities:
A Ph.D. degree in computer science or a related field, and at least one year of professional experience in a similar environment; Experience and skill with relational database management systems, database design, data management, Structured Query Language (SQL), and stored procedures; and Good communication skills including gathering requirements, training users, writing documentation, and giving presentations.
Desired Skills: Experience with the following systems/tools is also helpful:
Proficient in Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Visual Studio; Understanding of Microsoft Excel and Excel Pivot Tables or Excel Power Pivot; and Aggregating and factoring data based on categories of codes including economic data.
