Regional Planner

Summary of Position:  Responsible for one or more elements of the H-GAC regional planning programs, including solid waste management, disaster mitigation, habitat protection, low impact development and urban forestry, to include various other projects as assigned. 

Examples of Work:

  1. Provides staff support for committees and training workshops, which includes communication with stakeholders.
  2. Collects and analyzes geographic, demographic and environmental data; researches policies, regulations and best management practices.
  3. Prepares reports, briefing papers, plan documents, and presentation materials.
  4. Prepare and review proposals and grant applications.
  5. Performs other related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred, with emphasis in urban/regional planning or environmental planning.  Relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  2. Familiarity with regional environmental planning issues, regulations, and programs.
  3. Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  4. Ability to exercise independent judgment and perform tasks with limited supervision.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively on a team and with a wide range of individuals and groups.
  6. Ability to plan and effectively manage complex, long-term projects.
  7. Proficient in basic office software (word process, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations); experience with GIS and/or graphics software preferred.
