Transportation Planner

The Transportation Planner position will report to the Director of Parking & Transportation Services (P&TS) with a dotted line to the department’s Transportation Program Developer/Planner.  Their primary role will be to support the P&TS Director with the research and analysis related to transportation aspects of the University’s land use planning effort.  In addition, this role will also assist the director and the P&TS team in developing a master plan for P&TS for the next 5-10 years.  The P&TS master plan will support and reflect the needs identified in the university’s land use master plan.  This position is envisioned to be a 3-year term appointment with the potential for the position to be made permanent.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

In coordination with P&TS and LBRE planning staff, conduct planning, development, analysis and research efforts in support of the parking and transportation aspects of the university land use master plan.  This effort includes and is not limited to:

  • Conduct analysis and projections of future transportation infrastructure, program and service needs.  
  • Analyze and determine impact/benefit of local and regional transit service expansion and new service opportunities in consultation with local transit service providers.  Monitor regional and local transportation planning and projects for impacts on Stanford.   Analyze, review and/or participate in transportation studies conducted by local, regional and state agencies
  • Compile and analyze data related to traffic and transit ridership in and around the Stanford community. 
  • Determine the capacity of the regional transportation infrastructure that provides access to Stanford and when capacity will be exhausted
  • Determine new data sets required and develop methodology for collection and use.  Coordinate with land use master plan consultants on transportation related issues and data needs. 
  • Develop planning documents related to parking planning, transit services, service access, and bicycle circulation and supporting infrastructure.  Assist with determining future parking demand.
  • Research, analyze and report on a variety of transportation and parking-related studies.
  • Oversee regional coordination with other Silicon Valley employers on transportation programs, services and regional initiatives.
  • Assist with annual traffic counts and commuter survey. Contribute to development of metrics and analysis of TDM program effectiveness
  • Conduct benchmarking reviews of peer institutions and employers’ approaches to addressing transportation issues which apply to Stanford.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad variety of public and private agencies providing transportation services as well as agencies and officials involved in local and regional transportation planning efforts.

Qualifications

The Transportation Planner will have strong exposure to and familiarity with transportation planning principles and possess in-depth knowledge of the region’s transportation systems and agencies. The Transportation Planner candidate must demonstrate a background in transportation planning, including planning of transit, parking, bicycle, pedestrian, and/or vehicular mobility.   

The Transportation Planner will possess effective written and oral communication skills, and will demonstrate the ability to use tact, diplomacy and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters or materials. The candidate must possess excellent research, organizational and problem solving skills. The candidate must possess the ability to interact effectively at all levels, with a variety of groups, including peers in LBRE, senior university officials in academic and administrative departments, consultants, etc.  The candidate must have the ability to work in a team and to coordinate work with others.

The candidate must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively to develop consensus or cooperative solutions for a diverse range of issues in a highly decentralized environment.  Exceptional analytical and conceptual skills are critical to the success of this role.  He/she will demonstrate the ability to solve problems and produce recommendations with limited direction or guidance.

Other requirements include an ability to set and manage priorities in order to perform in a fast-paced environment where deadlines are critical and clients are expectations are high.  The candidate must be an independent, self-starter able to demonstrate the ability to take initiative.  Excellent management skills are important. The candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision in team-oriented environment. Excellent follow-up skills are important.

Strong computer skills are necessary, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word. The candidate will also be expected to learn and use other software as needed, including graphic design programs such as PowerPoint or Photoshop.

An undergraduate degree is required, and a master’s degree preferred, in a related field with a minimum of 5 years applicable experience.
