Department of Geography and Regional Planning – Tenure Track Position

Position Summary

The Department of Geography and Regional Planning at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for a full-time Geography tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2015.
Detailed Description

The IUP Department of Geography & Regional Planning offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography, a Bachelor of Science in Education—Social Science Education/Geography Track, a Planning Accreditation Board (PAB)-accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Regional Planning, a Master’s degree in Geography, and a graduate Certificate of Recognition in Geographic Information Science and Geospatial Techniques. Geography majors concentrate in Cartography/GIS, Economic Geography, Energy Geotechnology, Environmental Geography, or General Geography. Regional Planning majors focus on either Land Use Planning/GIS or Environmental Planning concentrations. Master’s degree candidates may select a track in GIS/Cartography, Environmental Planning, or Regional Planning. The successful candidate may be assigned to perform work at off-campus sites and/or provide instruction through distance education.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is located on the Allegheny Plateau 55 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. It is a rural setting in the heart of the unconventional shale gas and Appalachian bituminous coal fields, but simultaneously in close proximity to a major city. The location offers abundant opportunities for field study in many aspects of geography and regional planning in rural, suburban, and metropolitan environments. Position Qualifications

A Ph.D. in geography, planning, or an allied field is required. Ph.D. candidates who are ABD will be considered, but must have Ph.D by time of employment. The ideal candidate will be a geographer who can contribute to both the geography and regional planning curricula offered by the Department, with research expertise and teaching experience in two or more of the following areas: 1) human geography and/or regional planning; 2) environmental or physical geography; 3) geospatial techniques/cartography. We seek a scholar with a strong orientation towards teaching ranging from introductory geography and planning courses to graduate seminars.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching geography/planning program courses such as Introduction to Planning, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, Introduction to Cartography, Climatology, Physiography, Political Geography, or Planning History as will the ability to develop an international regional specialty.

The Department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence in providing leadership in teaching, research, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview(s), which will include a teaching demonstration and a research colloquium.
