Geospatial Technician

Position Summary:

Reporting to the GIS Manager and working as a member of the Office of University Planning (OUP), the primary role of the Geospatial Technician is to validate, create, and update university data necessary to maintain a robust database of campus facility information (buildings, grounds, and infrastructure) at Virginia Tech. This information will be created and maintained in an enterprise GIS, CAD, and Information Database format for Virginia Tech in accordance with university standards. The Geospatial Technician will work to resolve discrepancies in the geodatabase and CAD files to ensure the accuracy of infrastructure data, coordinate with utility groups to develop and share location information, and perform field checks as necessary to confirm accuracy of data. Additionally, the Geospatial Technician will assist with projects specific to infrastructure data including utility modeling, asset management, and interior space. Additional responsibilities include map production for university departments and outside agencies as needed and providing occasional training assistance regarding access to enterprise systems. The Geospatial Technician will also assist with archival duties, CAD drawing updates, verification of interior space data as part of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) space guideline and utilization standards, and field surveying as needed.
Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Engineering, or Architecture or related work experience and training equivalent to Bachelor’s degree.
• Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or higher, ESRI ArcGIS or similar GIS software, and enterprise database systems.
• Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe product suite for day-to-day office functions.
• Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, set priorities and engage in several projects simultaneously.
• Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills and work well in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of ArcSDE, ArcServer, mobile data collection, survey equipment and Topcon GPS products and software.
• Experience working in a similar role at an institution of higher education.
