ASSISTANT PLANNER - Neighborhoods

This job is located in the Housing and Community Development Division of the  Planning Department with The City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor.  Assistant Planner is an entry-level professional classification that requires previously acquired skills in research, verbal and written communication.  This position will work collaboratively with residents and community partners to assist in the development and implementation of innovative neighborhood revitalization strategies and programs, known as the Strong Neighborhood Initiative. The position will also assist in grant management and compliance as appropriate.  Essential job functions include: conducting research in specific or varied project areas and compiling, computing, and presenting planning data according to specified standards and formats. Assistant Planner’s participate in using, interpreting, and preparing maps, plans, charts, or other graphic illustrations. Employees of this classification also write project-related reports and prepare working papers and other correspondence. Within this classification, differentiation occurs with respect to the disciplinary knowledge required of the incumbent. In addition to general planning knowledge, specialty areas include: transportation planning (involving the projection and development of efficient transportation systems); economic planning (involving the assessment of probable economic and social ramifications of public expenditures or variable deletions, modifications, or additions to the area’s economic base); parks & recreation management planning (involving maintenance of the City’s parks and recreational facilities and master plans); and historical preservation planning (involving the coordination, implementation, and maintenance of the City’s comprehensive preservation plan). Assistant Planner’s in all disciplines are responsible for assisting in the presentation of formal and technical reports and working papers. Work products are subject to frequent review by a supervisor. 

VETERANS PREFERENCE
A five-point preference will be awarded on the initial scored selection process for honorably discharged veterans of the United States Armed Forces not currently employed full time by the City of Oklahoma City. Qualified applicants must submit a copy of their DD Form 214 indicating discharge type/character of service at time of application.
 Job Requirements:

DEPARTMENTAL  PREFERENCES
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Urban Planning,  Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Geography, Public Policy/Administration, Sociology or related field.
  • Experience working directly with residents and community partners developing strategies/programs to revitalize distressed neighborhoods by improving overall economic and social health, appearance, accessibility and safety of neighborhoods.
  • Experience in community engagement, public meetings, and facilitation.
  • Experience in Geographic Information Systems and data analysis.
  • Experience in presentation and design software such as InDesign and SketchUp
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
 
 Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
  • Outside frequently; may be exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc.
  • Occasionally required to work beyond normal working hours.
  • Subject to local travel on a daily basis.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
  • Hearing and speech enough to communicate effectively by telephone or in-person.
  • Near vision enough to read and draft written communications.
  • Mobility enough to continuously move one’s self from place to place when conducting field surveys.
  • Far vision enough to accurately determine the condition of structures.
