Geographic Information System (GIS) Coordinator

Under the general direction of the Chief Information Officer, performs highly responsible management, administrative and technical work in planning and directing the activities of the City’s Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment.  Work involves developing City wide GIS polices and standards, assisting departments in the development and implementation of GIS applications, leading and providing direction to the City’s GIS User Group, and developing and implementing GIS solutions to better serve Hallandale Beach citizens and businesses.

Employee is responsible for conducting studies of departments or sections of departments to identify areas where the application of GIS technologies can be used to facilitate improvements in the quality of work and efficiency of the workers in that area.  Employee is also expected to make recommendations for GIS applications and GIS data to be made available for public consumption.  Other responsibilities include supporting the technical GIS needs of existing GIS customers, performing maintenance and update of GIS data, conducting spatial analyses, map creation, and automating repetitive tasks.

Employee is required to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed through peer group meetings, personal conferences, the evaluation of written reports, and the quality of completed projects including adherence to project schedules.  Employee is also required to exercise initiative in staying abreast of technological changes in GIS and Information Technology.

 

Qualifications

(a) Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in computer science or GIS related field; plus six (6) years’ experience in developing and implementing GIS applications in a large and complex GIS environment utilizing ESRI GIS software; or any relevant combination of training and experience.

(b) Certification from the Federal Emergency Management Administration, National Incident Management System IS-700 Introduction to NIMS, IS-800 National Response Plan, IS-100 Introduction to Incident Command, and IS-200 Incident Command for Single Resources or ability to obtain within one (1) month of employment. Certification from the Federal Emergency Management Administration, IS-300 Intermediate Incident Command System, and IS-400 Advanced Incident Command System or ability to obtain within nine (9) months of employment.

(c) Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

 

Special Requirements

• Must possess a valid state of Florida driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
