Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Contract Instructor (Mesa College)

Pay Information

The salary range for this Assistant Professor level position is $5,389.42 – $7,068.05 per month. Note that all new faculty hired by the SDCCD start at the Assistant Professor level. The highest monthly base starting salary would be $7,068.05 with a PhD and 1 year full-time prior teaching experience. Overload assignments are paid based on contract parity using the Adjunct/Overload College Classroom and Non-Classroom, Schedules B and C. Salary placement is based solely upon education and experience as outlined in the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, and it is non-negotiable. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made on the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, will be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Assistant Professors may earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.


With promotions through Associate and Professor levels based upon mastery in the field, teaching of that knowledge, a PhD or equivalent, successful evaluations and tenure track experience, the top range would be $11,210.31. Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at San Diego Mesa College, beginning Fall 2015. Assignment may include some combination of on-line, day, evening, Saturday, Sunday and/or off-campus classes. While the current vacancy exists at Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. In addition, this pool may be used to fill identical vacancies that may occur during the 2015-2016 academic year.

Major Responsibilities

Knowledge and experience in teaching lower division/community college level students and commitment to maintaining college standards.

Completion of graduate level coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including Remote Sensing.

Knowledge, experience and/or academic preparation to teach lower division/community college level subject matter included in GIS curricula.

Professional work experience in the field of GIS, including demonstrated excellence in project development and completion.

Demonstrated excellence in written, oral, and visual communication.

Recent teaching experience in GIS at the lower-division college level.

Proficiency and experience in developing, delivering, and communicating GIS education in the classroom and online.

Evidence of collaboration with industry, community, and/or professional organizations on curriculum and internship development.

Demonstrated experience using GIS hardware and software currently employed in industry.

Ability to relate to and work with a diverse cultural and ethnic population.

Qualifications

1. Master’s degree in geography/geographic information systems; OR

2.Bachelor’s degree in geography/geographic information systems AND Master’s degree in geology, history, meteorology, or oceanography; OR

3. The documented equivalent; OR,

4. Meet the criteria stipulated under Interdisciplinary Studies.
