College of William & Mary
The College of William & Mary seeks a motivated GIS specialist to support the use of GIS in teaching, learning and research across the curriculum. The GIS specialist will be the Director of William and Mary’s Center for Geospatial Analysis (CGA) and will provide support for effective GIS use across campus. Position responsibilities include: 1) teaching introductory and/or upper level GIS courses and short GIS workshops; 2) management of CGA facilities; and 3) support of faculty and undergraduate and graduate student GIS-based research. The Director will also have the opportunity to sit on undergraduate and graduate student thesis committees. The Director will report to the Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies. This is a 12-month, continuing faculty position at the rank of lecturer or senior lecturer depending on experience.
We seek a broadly trained, academically oriented candidate with an interest in working with faculty and students from multiple disciplines and experience in applying GIS methods to research problems. In addition to teaching courses, a central goal of the position is to provide GIS assistance to faculty, graduate students, and staff on campus. The position will involve managing the GIS facility, including supervision of teaching assistants as well as maintenance of hardware and software (with support from Information Technology). Given the scope of the position, excellent interpersonal skills and experience in GIS teaching/training, project management, and supervisory roles are essential. Proficiency in ESRI GIS products (e.g., ArcGIS) is required and programming skills (e.g., the ability to write scripts) are highly desirable. A Ph.D. is preferred by the time of appointment, but area of specialty is open. The College of William and Mary is a public institution with approximately 6300 undergraduates and 2100 graduate students, with a strong liberal arts tradition and a commitment to both teaching and research.
Applicants should submit their application electronically. For further information, qualifications, and to apply please visit our online application system at https://jobs.wm.edu/. Please include a letter of application, current resume, a statement of teaching and research, and the names and contact information of three references, and address these materials to: Dr. Matthias Leu, GIS Search Chair, Biology Department, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA 23187. Please contact the chair either via email (mleu@wm.edu) or phone (757-221-7497) with questions. Review begins March 9, 2015, and will continue until the position is filled. The position start date is on or after July 1, 2015. The College of William & Mary is an EOE/AA university.
