Program Director of the Professional Masters in GIS development

Official Title:

Degree and area of specialization:

Master's Degree in GIScience or related fields required. PhD preferred.
   
   

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Applicant should be trained broadly in the area of GIScience (including cartography and visualization) with technical skills and experience in computer programming and emerging technologies in GIScience.

Principal duties: The Professional Masters' in GIS in the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a full time Program Director. The program director serves as the anchor point for this program in terms of program promotion, course offering and student services. The Professional Masters' program will be a non-thesis program operating on a program revenue model. It will be oriented towards skills development with a focus on training students in advanced geospatial database design, geospatial analysis, web-based and mobile mapping, geovisualization and programming skills. The program will be offered fully online and targeted at working professionals and international students who are interested in GIS programming skills and new tools/techniques for advanced GIS application support.

Duties include:

INSTRUCTION (55%)
- Teach three online courses from the program offerings per year: Geography 378 (Geocomputing, 4 credits) in Fall, Geography 574 (Spatial Database, 4 credits) in Spring, and Geography 570 (Capstone in GIS, 4 credit) in Summer. (40%)
- Direct student practicums (in conjunction with faculty in GIScience and related field). (10%)
- Facilitate and coordinate the course/program development (5%)

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, ADMINISTRATION AND OUTREACH (45%)
- Actively promote/market the program and recruit students (10%)
- Provide academic advising and student support services (10%)
- Develop policy and procedures to facilitate offering of the program to nontraditional students (3%).
- Manage program revenue and provide financial reports to the department (5%).
- Monitor the trends in GIScience and related professions (5%)
- Work with faculty to update/revise the program as needed (5%)
- Manage the program assessment and program student databases (5%)
- Other duties as necessary to successfully implement the program (2%)
