DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University's Department of Geography invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position. We seek candidates with the ability to teach courses in cartography and upper-division geospatial or other geography courses depending on expertise and department need. The teaching load could include both lower and upper division courses, some of which may be general education offerings. RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor level; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee's qualifications and experience. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Geography or closely related field from an accredited college or university is preferred at the time of appointment. Applicants with considerable progress toward degree completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of the terminal degree is required prior to the start of the second probationary year following initial appointment.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
- Ability to teach courses in cartography and upper-division geospatial or other geography courses depending on expertise and department need;
- Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
- Interest and ability to teach a range of courses (major, general education, etc.);
- Record of, or potential for, involving students in research and scholarly activity; and
- Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: courses in cartography and geospatial techniques and upper-division courses depending on expertise and department need. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. This position could also involve serving as Director of the Humboldt State University Institute for Cartographic Design.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are teaching; research, scholarship and creative activity; and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
