Assistant Professor - Geography (2016/2017)

The Department of Geography at Central Washington University invites applications for a nine-month, full-time tenure track assistant professor position beginning 16 September, 2016. The department seeks a geographic information scientist who will sustain and build upon our strengths in GIS and support the new Bachelor of Science, Geographic Information Science specialization. The person hired will teach some combination of Maps and Cartography, Introduction to GIS, Intermediate GIS, and Advanced GIS, and will establish one or more new courses that expand our offerings into areas such as databases, mobile GIS, web GIS, scripting, or open source GIS. Further, the person hired for this position will be expected to help lead the GIS program, eventually serving as program director. Beyond teaching and service, we further seek a scholar whose research in geographic information science or applications of GIS has good potential to attract external grant and/or contract funding and to foster collaboration with students.

Additional preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to fulfilling the primary GIS emphasis described above, can also teach other undergraduate and/or graduate courses that meet the needs of the department and interdisciplinary programs in which we participate, including the MS in Cultural and Environmental Resource Management, Environmental Studies, and/or the Institute for Integrated Energy Studies. The department has approximately 70 undergraduate majors and offers a BA in Geography and BS in Geography degrees specializing in Environmental and Resource Geography or GIScience.
