University of Maryland Dept of Geographical Sciences

Graduate Research Assistantships/Teaching Assistantships

Recently rated among the top graduate programs in the nation by the National Research Council, the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland is seeking a new cohort of highly qualified and motivated graduate students to enter its Ph.D. program. As leaders in remote sensing, geospatial-information science, coupled human and natural systems, land-use land cover change, ecosystem dynamics, and applied geographic economics, the Department is uniquely positioned to research the human and physical dimensions of global change. The Department has strong collaborations with federal agencies, such as NASA, NOAA, USGS, EPA and the DOE (including the Joint Global Change Research Institute).

 

Incoming graduate students can be supported on Graduate Research Assistantships or Teaching Assistantships. Fellowship funds are also available. Recent research projects/topics include: global agricultural monitoring research; impact assessment of land use change on atmospheric carbon; development  of next-generation technologies and applications at the confluence of GIS, computing, and human geography; Modeling telecouplings across natural and human systems; interdisciplinary research efforts to understand different climate impacts based on Land Use Land Cover Change scenarios; interdisciplinary research efforts to quantify wildfire pollutant and aerosol emissions using simulations, data assimilation and satellite observation; habitat characterization and biodiversity analyses; multispectral, hyperspectral and lidar remote sensing and other geospatial analysis techniques; land-use change; ecosystem services; water resources; environmental economics and sustainability, among others.

 

Current starting PhD student stipend: $19,603 (start)/9.5 months appointment; with 10 credit hours/semester tuition remission currently valued at $5,500/semester ($11,000 academic year). Graduate Research and Teaching Assistantships are also entitled to health benefits.
