GIS Analyst

Under the supervision of the GIS lead in the Land, Buildings and Real Estate (LBRE) Dept of Technology, this position performs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related analysis and support for the LBRE organization.

Responsibilities include support of the day to day maintenance, analysis, mapping and application support for GIS clients in departments campus-wide.

As a member of the GIS Services team, this position requires GIS skills for technical coordination with clients to analyze mapping-related requirements and provide timely solutions. The position independently develops highly effective and functional maps to help clients.

The GIS Analyst is part of a team that assists in the collection, management, and maintenance of digital data (spatial and attributes) pertaining to facilities and infrastructure. This position conducts analysis of data utilizing Geographic Information Systems tools to clarify and communicate spatial relationships among datasets and present them in an appropriate, cartographic manner.

The position facilitates adherence to data standards and is involved with metadata development.

GIS Analyst tasks may include software training including preparation and implementation of training materials and assisting clients with technical and data related issues.

The position may also assist with development of new GIS tools and applications or improves existing query and analysis tools supporting clients for information retrieval, analysis and presentation.

Core Duties:
• Create maps, geographic data, charts, tables, graphs and graphics using GIS and related software. Identify attributes to be associated with mapped features and link to features as data are collected, surveyed or drafted.
• Conduct data analysis utilizing GIS tools to clarify and communicate spatial relationships and present results in a clear, appropriate, manner
• Analyze and integrate spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.
• Compile geographic data from a variety of sources including field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
• Identify and display geographic relationships among varying types of data.
• Enter new map data through use of a digitizer or by direct input of coordinate information using various cartographic methods.
• Develop and maintain geospatial databases. Conduct research to locate and obtain existing databases. Correct data to ensure highest degree of accuracy.
• Work with clients to identify data needs.
• Review and ensure that data developed by and/or obtained by staff are accurate and documented using industry adopted metadata standards.
• Develop automated processes to expedite routine data analyses and mapping functions.
• Modify or test existing scripts.
• Assist GIS mobile and internet applications development.


Qualifications

 • Bachelor's degree with a GIS focus OR closely related field such as Architecture, Planning, Engineering
• Three or more years of experience with GIS related work using ESRI, Autodesk products or related GIS products is required.
• Must be able to work with ESRI's ArcGIS, ArcSDE and GIS-related equipment such as plotters, and GPS mapping units.
• Experience with web mapping applications (ESRI ArcGIS Server and Autodesk Infrastructure map Server)
• Understanding of topologic types and relationships and database design elements.
• Possess cartographic aptitude with ability to complete basic mathematical and statistical calculations.
• Experience with FME (Feature Manipulation Engine)
• Extensive experience and a solid understanding of graphic image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
• Responsible for multiple projects and priorities with crucial deadlines while dealing with a diverse group of University departments.
• Able to coordinate and execute large design projects.
• Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people.
• Proficient at MSWord, PowerPoint, Excel and Access.
• Must be customer oriented and anticipate future needs and requests.
• Ability to access areas that are accessible through stairs and navigate all areas of the campus terrain in order to locate and map facilities-related assets.
