Research Project Assistant

Posting Summary

The Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies is a signature effort by Rutgers University- Newark to focus the intellectual talent and resources of the institution in service to Newark and its surrounding region and beyond. The Cornwall Center encourages and conducts relevant research and hosts learning opportunities aimed at improving the cultural, social, and economic development of the community, city, and region in which the Center resides.

The Research Project Assistant will assist the Director in data (primary and secondary) collection efforts regarding local, regional, and/or national studies on community and economic development, youth services programs, education and juvenile justice policies. The Research Assistant prepares reports, summary materials, and fact sheets as required and requested. The hire may also conduct Internet searches to obtain additional information. The Research Assistant will train interns and work-study students in data collection methods.

Further, the hire will conduct spatial analysis of primary and secondary data using Geographical Information Software (GIS). Successful candidates will be expected to (1) write technical reports, journal article submissions, & prepare conference presentations; and (2) complete work independently with broadly defined work objectives.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum requirement is 2 years experience and a bachelor’s degree, preferably in urban and regional planning, urban studies, criminal justice, public administration, social work, social policy, or public policy from an accredited degree program. Bachelor’s degrees in other fields will be considered where previous work experience is relevant to the requirements of this position. Advanced proficiency in ArcGIS is required.
Preferred Qualifications

A masters degree, preferably in urban and regional planning, urban studies, criminal justice, public administration, social work, social policy, or public policy from an accredited graduate degree program.
Equipment Utilized

Strong knowledge and use of geospatial mapping data including ESRI ArcGIS. Most also be familiar with SPSS and/or STATA.
