GIS Specialist

The GIS Specialist is responsible for compiling the data necessary to create and maintain the Geographic Information System (GIS) to support the facilities and land use management of the University. This will include the collection, maintenance, display of the campus base map, area coverage, and other GIS related spatial databases within a comprehensive GIS. This position will also produce special graphic coverages and combine various data layers to produce maps using GIS software.
Required Education and Experience     

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience. One year of experience in GIS projects.
Preferred Education and Experience     

Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or closely related field. Two to three years experience (coursework and internships are acceptable under guidelines) utilizing ArcGIS 9.3 or higher.
Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations     

Valid driver’s license. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas class “C” vehicle operator’s license within 30 days of employment.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills     

Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD/MicroStation, Access, and standard office applications. Knowledge of ArcInfo, Spatial Analyst, and geodatabases. Fundamental knowledge and skill in the operation of GIS equipment, including computer hardware, plotter/printer setup, and GPS. Knowledge of databases such as Access, SQL, and SDE.

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to drive a University vehicle and have a good driving record. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed     

-Creates and maintains the department’s GIS data
-Creates maps using GIS software
Duties Performed     

Interprets civil site plans, plat maps, legal descriptions, and other technical drawings
Duties Performed     

Conducts GPS surveying of campus features
Duties Performed     

Provides supportive mapping data and analysis upon request
Duties Performed     

-Conducts mapping research in the field and office
-Drives a university vehicle to various campus locations
Duties Performed     

-Provides courteous, responsive, quality service to our customers by fostering a respectful, positive, and welcoming environment for all
-Represents the department to internal and external customers by actively supporting diversity
-Maintains 100% “on time” compliance with all university required training for all employees
-Approves time worked and requests appropriate leave in a timely manner
-Reads and responds to e-mail
-Reviews/reads information listed on the department intranet
-Performs assigned tasks in a safe manner and utilizes personal protective items/equipment as appropriate or instructed by supervisor or department
-Reports unsafe actions or conditions to supervisor immediately and supports and follows unit/department safety guidelines, practices, and policies.
