ABOUT THE POSITION:
The San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department is seeking a GIS Analyst I/II (based on experience and qualifications) to join our team. This is a rewarding career opportunity for a GIS professional to join an APWA accredited public works department. This GIS Analyst will join a team of over 260 public works professionals who provide the full range of public works services across San Luis Obispo County. All GIS Analysts that work for the County of San Luis Obispo work together to support the enterprise as well as their individual departments. The GIS Analyst positions are part of a career series that provides the opportunity for growth. The County of San Luis Obispo primarily uses Esri ArcGIS Desktop and Server technology to manage our Enterprise GIS.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate will have a solid background in Geospatial Information System (GIS) fundamentals as you would typically find in graduates from an accredited program with an emphasis in GIS. The ideal candidate will have SQL database, web mapping skills and/or water related GIS skills. As this is a public agency, the ideal candidate will also have a passion to serve the public. A community that is prosperous, safe, livable and well governed will depend, in part, on how well GIS Analysts use their skills to map, inventory, and analyze our infrastructure and resources. The ideal candidate will be organized and be able to simultaneously track multiple projects. The ideal candidate will possess good communication skills for collecting project requirements and presenting findings to department staff. Finally, the ideal candidate will have a desire to continue learning and be mentored on these above mentioned skills.

Minimum requirements for this position:
GIS Analyst I: An Associate's degree in GIS, Cartography, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, Planning, or other GIS related field OR 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university which includes coursework in a GIS related field. (Job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

GIS Analyst II: Either A: Bachelor's degree in GIS, Cartography, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, Planning, or other GIS related field. OR B: An associate's degree or 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university in any of the fields listed above and two years of experience related to geographic information systems or computer-aided mapping. (Job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Certain positions in this classification may require driving. When driving is an essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver's license will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
PLEASE NOTE: The Department may fill this position at a GIS Analyst I or II level. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be hired at Step 1 of the salary range. Depending on experience and qualifications, placement may be made at Step 2 or Step 3 of the five-step salary range. Employees generally ascend to a higher step after performing successfully at their current step for one year.
